May we introduce you to our vanilla-pear butter with a little slice of San Francisco history?
It was 1966. Kathryn H. was 19 years old. She wanted a simpler life. It was time, she said, to reconnect with nature.
So she left her home in San Francisco and traveled north into the Canadian wilderness. It was an experiment in living off the land, in perfect harmony with the earth. She lasted five months.
Back in San Francisco a year later, it was over a vegetarian lunch one day that Kathryn met Allen, The Cosmic Messiah himself. They got to talking.
A few years earlier, it seems, Allen had a conversations with a group of enlightened extraterrestrials. They spoke to Allen of love and fulfillment. They spoke to Allen of spiritual awakening and rebirth. It was up to Allen, they said, to transform the earth into a veritable paradise, a communal system in which the means of production were shared by all, and the rewards of creativity were held in common.
Some might have called Allen's vision the socialist ideal. Allen called it the One World Family Gospel.
Kathryn swallowed the Gospel wholeheartedly. She began working in the One World Family's natural foods restaurant, cooking and serving under the 'Love is Service Done' banner. She prepared buckwheat groats and soya carob nut brownies. She took no wages, of course.
Every night, the Family performed original Aquarian Age Music at the restaurant. On Thursdays, Allen would channel the words of the extraterrestrials. There were plans for a Mexican Vegetarian Patio and an Italian Pizza Bar. And on the nights when the sun and the moon were in perfect alignment, on the Vernal and Autumnal Equinox, well, the One World Family would party...
This year, the Vernal Equinox falls on Sunday, March 20th.
But in 2005, we'd never try to force some macroburger mix on you. In the years since 1969, we've learned that the best way to eat is to eat seasonally and to eat locally. Things just taste better that way.
So cmbsweets has cooked up something to help you celebrate the change of the seasons 2005 style: our first-ever vanilla-pear butter.
cmbsweets has rounded up a mix of Comice and D'Anjou pears. We've added some orange juice and some lemon juice, cooked it all up in a bath of white wine grown in Sonoma, added a drop of sugar and a dollop of vanilla to create the freshest vanilla-pear butter youve ever had.
Oranges and pears are winter fruits. Once this batch is finished, we can look forward to the bright flavors of spring -- the apricots and berries that begin to ripen with the hours of sunlight that come as the seasons change.
Mmm. It's a taste of pearadise.
Because, as Allen said back in 1974, it is possible to stay in the high synthesis of activities of creating a New Age of absolute freedom, security and abundance, and eternal good health and vitality for all with a balanced natural foods diet.
So get yourself some of that vanilla-pear butter.
May the force be with you.
Love,
carolina
ps. Like all good former hippies, Kathryn now lives in Marin. She likes to run.
